{"id":297,"date":"2012-02-01T10:27:12","date_gmt":"2012-02-01T15:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www6b.wittenberg.edu\/lib\/blog\/wordpress\/?p=297"},"modified":"2012-02-01T10:27:14","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T15:27:14","slug":"from-the-archives-class-rush-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wittprojects.net\/library_blog\/?p=297","title":{"rendered":"From the Archives &#8212; Class Rush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div id=\"attachment_301\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www6b.wittenberg.edu\/lib\/blog\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=301\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-301\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-301\" src=\"http:\/\/www6b.wittenberg.edu\/lib\/blog\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Wittenberger-cover-September-24-19021-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Wittenberger cover September 24 1902\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-301\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cover of The Wittenberger featuring this story.<\/p><\/div>From the mid-1800s to the 1910s it was a popular tradition in colleges across the nation for the Freshman and Sophomore classes to engage in a class rivalry competition referred to as \u201cclass rush\u201d or \u201ccolor rush.\u201d\u00a0 These violent games were seen as rites of passage for the freshman class and played into strong senses of class spirit in a time where each class had representative class colors, yells and flags.\u00a0 There seem to be many variations of this game, for instance the sewing of class colors into the insides of jackets (to be ripped out by the opposing classmates), or the raising of a class flag which the rival class would attempt to bring down by physical force.\u00a0 At Wittenberg, this ritual involved a dummy made to look like a Sophomore\u2014constructed by the freshmen\u2014which would be strung up on a tree for the Sophomores to attempt a forcible removal.\u00a0 Below is the account of the 1902 Wittenberg \u201cclass rush\u201d featured in the student magazine <em>The Wittenberger.\u00a0 <\/em>Unsurprisingly, many colleges and universities eventually forbade the practice, or replaced it with less\u2026uh\u2026ferocious competitions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"center\"><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Wittenberger<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> , Vol. XXIX Number 1, September 24<sup>th<\/sup> 1902<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">THE SCRAP<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As usual at the opening of college at Wittenberg, one of the most frequent topics for conversation was the coming contest between the two lower classes.<\/p>\n<p>From the first day until the day on which the rush passed into history, both the Freshmen and Sophs kept counting their braves and comparing their strength with that of their opponents.<\/p>\n<p>The Sophs were confident of winning from the first, and though the Freshies had some hope, they were afraid to let anyone know it.\u00a0 Many of them were strangers to the situation and not until some of the Sophs had spent the best part of their strength did they realize what was really taking place.\u00a0 When they did, the Sophs thought for a few moments that another class had been turned loose on them.<\/p>\n<p>The Sophs had been kept guessing two or three days.\u00a0 They were almost sure Tuesday night that war would begin the next morning.\u00a0 But when at midnight all the Freshies were snugly tucked in bed and fast asleep the Sophs shook their heads and were put in suspense for twenty-four hours longer.\u00a0 On Wednesday evening the Sophs were again on the alert and were on the look-out for any sign of the coming fray.\u00a0 The Freshmen, however, were very cautious and not until the Sophs had captured two Freshmen and found them well supplied with ropes, were they absolutely sure that the scrap was about to take place.\u00a0 These two men the Sophs confined in the cellar at Wm. Gotwald\u2019s home [<em>probably 505 N. Fountain<\/em>], where the Sophs had congregated.\u00a0 Meanwhile the Freshmen had met in a house on West High street and were there discussing their plans.\u00a0 At four o\u2019clock in the morning they proceeded to campus and just west of Hamma Divinity Hall strung up a dummy gaily decked in the Sophomore class colors.\u00a0 The dummy was suspended from a wire stretched between two trees and the trees wrapped with barbed wire.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_305\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www6b.wittenberg.edu\/lib\/blog\/wordpress\/?attachment_id=305\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-305\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-305\" src=\"http:\/\/www6b.wittenberg.edu\/lib\/blog\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Class-rush-photograph-19071-1024x750.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Class rush photograph 1907\" width=\"640\" height=\"468\" class=\"size-large wp-image-305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wittprojects.net\/library_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Class-rush-photograph-19071-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.wittprojects.net\/library_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Class-rush-photograph-19071-150x109.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.wittprojects.net\/library_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Class-rush-photograph-19071-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wittprojects.net\/library_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Class-rush-photograph-19071.jpg 1193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Class rush from a different Year\u20141907\u2014with the traditional \u201cSoph\u201d dummy in front of Meyers Hall.<\/p><\/div>When the inhabitants of the Dorm arose on Thursday morning, September 12<sup>th<\/sup>, they saw the entire male aggregation of Freshmen assembled in a group under the suspended effigy of the Sophomore class.\u00a0 The Freshmen girls were also present and gave valuable assistance.\u00a0 By 8:30 o\u2019clock the entire student body and most of the professors had gathered around the group of Freshmen and were waiting with interest to see what would happen when the Sophs arrived.\u00a0 Several times the alarm was sounded that they were coming and the Freshies prepared for defense, but nothing came of it.\u00a0 A few minutes before nine o\u2019clock the Sophs were heard coming up Center hill.\u00a0 It would be impossible to describe the different expressions on the faces of the Freshmen when they came into view.\u00a0 But back of it all was the spirit of \u2018do or die.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As the Sophs came nearer the Freshies came closer together and gritted their teeth the harder.\u00a0 When they were a few feet in front of the Freshmen group they halted.\u00a0 The signal was given by Capt. Grosscup of the Sophs and ! ! ! ! ! ! !\u00a0 After the dust had settled somewhat it was difficult to tell which side had the most men down.\u00a0 At the beginning the Sophs seemed to have much the advantage.\u00a0 But after a few minutes the Freshies began to realize there was \u201csomethin\u2019 doin\u2019\u201d and began to fight in earnest.\u00a0 One by one the Sophs found themselves under a Freshmen.\u00a0 It is impossible to give a personal account of the rush.\u00a0 Every man did his best and has no reason to be ashamed of his attempt to defend his class honor.\u00a0 When the fight started Jim Driscol made an attempt to climb one of the trees and take down the dummy, but he had scarcely started when he was pulled down by at least four Freshies.<\/p>\n<p>The tusstle [sic] lasted thirty minutes.\u00a0 Both Freshmen and Sophomore girls did all they could for their class, but were prevented from taking a too active part by Drs.
