His book, Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America, delves into the 1949 story of four African-American men accused of raping a young white woman in Florida. Thurgood Marshall was sent by the NAACP to defend the young men.

Devil In the Grove was the 2013 Dayton Literary Peace Prize runner-up for non-fiction.
